Our Vision
The Hāmākua Agricultural Cooperative is a community of farmers working together to support each other and the Island community by successfully producing fine quality, sustainably produced Hāmākua agricultural products.
Rebuilding Our Community
When the Hāmākua Agricultural Cooperative (Co-op) was formed in 1994, it marked a pivotal moment in the island’s history, as more than 100 years of plantation life on the Hāmākua Coast came to an end. After the closure of the Hāmākua sugar plantation, the creation of the Co-op opened new opportunities for displaced sugar workers and their families, many of whom were working to rebuild their lives and community without the industry that had supported and shaped them for generations.
Today, the Hāmākua Agricultural Co-op, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, offers residents the opportunity to sublease farmland across more than 100 farms ranging in size from 3 to 20 acres. These properties are located between Pa‘auilo and Honoka‘a along the Hāmākua Coast. We offer some of the most affordable lease rates in the state, and our lands are situated at low elevations with access to irrigation water from the Hāmākua Ditch.
Benefits of a Cooperative
Our cooperative structure provides for democratic governance and collaboration among members on marketing, processing and distribution of products. We also provide legislative advocacy and access to educational and funding opportunities for our members.
